Extra Note: As an unconventional leader and art educator, I could not resist turning this idea into a brief musical experience. This extra is simply a creative extension of the Human Pipeline concept — because sometimes a message deserves to be not only explained, but also performed.
Human Pipeline did not start as an isolated project. It grew from my earlier work with Clock-Skewed Learners, where I began examining what happens when a learner has capability, but timing, structure, language, or learning conditions do not allow that capability to become fully visible. The idea continued to evolve through later coursework, especially as I became more focused on evidence, communication, transfer, and visible learning. Human Pipeline is the next step in that evolution. I am still talking about English, but now from a broader perspective: how do we help people make what they know, what they can do, and the strength of their thinking visible in academic and professional contexts?

From timing and misalignment to visibility, transfer, and capability.
Public Speaking for Multilingual Learners, with an academic and professional spoken-English focus. This is not a general ESL course. Its focus is spoken communication in contexts where learners must make academic, professional, disciplinary, or complex conceptual thinking understandable to an English-speaking audience. The course is designed for learners who already operate — or are preparing to operate — in postsecondary and professional environments where spoken English is required for meaningful participation.
Postsecondary and adult learning, including college, university, graduate, doctoral, academic, and professional contexts.
Multilingual postsecondary learners whose spoken-English performance may not yet fully represent the complexity of what they understand, organize, analyze, or communicate conceptually. This may include university students, graduate students, professors, researchers, immigrants, and international professionals. I am not assuming that every multilingual learner has difficulty; the course begins with evidence from the individual learner.
Some multilingual learners may possess disciplinary knowledge, reasoning, research ability, and complex ideas that are not yet fully visible through spoken-English performance. English proficiency should not be used as a proxy for intellectual or academic capability. The course therefore asks which elements of spoken performance are limiting the public expression of capabilities already demonstrated elsewhere.
Professional communication practice also identifies accent bias as a factor that can influence how multilingual speakers are perceived. Peter Novak describes accent bias as a tendency to place greater trust in speakers who sound like members of one's own linguistic group and explains that such perceptions can influence workplace judgments. He argues that the communication goal should not be accent elimination or native-like perfection, but greater clarity of meaning and delivery, with particular attention to prosodic features such as pacing, emphasis, pausing, volume, and inflection (Abrahams, 2026). This distinction reinforces the Human Pipeline boundary: accent or spoken-English performance may affect how a message is perceived, but neither should be treated as evidence of the learner's intellectual or academic capability.
The relevant instructional question is not "What is the learner capable of?" The appropriate instructional question is: "What part of a capability already demonstrated through relevant evidence is not yet becoming fully visible through spoken English, and what specifically needs to be developed so that it can?"
Consider, for example, a learner who can already demonstrate the following argumentative structure:
Claim → Evidence → Comparison → Conclusion
If that organization is already demonstrated in Portuguese or through another relevant performance but cannot yet be reproduced clearly in spoken English, the appropriate instructional conclusion is not that the learner cannot organize an argument. The conclusion is that argument organization is already demonstrated, and that its transfer and expression through spoken English require targeted development. The instructional target is therefore not the learner's capacity to reason — it is the route between demonstrated reasoning and its clearer expression through English.
The goal is not perfect English before the learner is allowed to speak. The goal is to help the learner communicate the strongest possible version of their thinking with the English they currently have, while developing the competencies that evidence shows still require work. Public speaking makes the route from thought to organization to expression to audience communication observable.

Human Pipeline operationalizes that route through the following instructional sequence:

At this stage, Human Pipeline is a transferable course prototype rather than a course housed within a specific university. I therefore do not claim accreditation standards or institutional requirements that have not been established. The design is informed by the following documents and reference sources.
The Human Pipeline course outline is the primary internal design document. It defines the instructional purpose, the four-week sequence, the learning route, the evidence progression, and the course boundaries. It establishes what the course is designed to do, for whom, and under what conditions.
The CEFR Companion Volume (Council of Europe, 2020) functions as an external spoken-language performance reference. It may inform consideration of qualitative features of spoken communication such as range, accuracy, fluency, interaction, and coherence. CEFR does not define the learner. It does not measure intellectual capability. It provides a performance reference that can inform how spoken-English evidence is described and interpreted — nothing more.
When Human Pipeline is deployed within a real institution, relevant local policies may govern accessibility, privacy, academic integrity, technology use, learner support, assessment, and delivery requirements. These policies must be applied when known. They are not invented for the prototype.
A TOEFL result or prior speaking performance may be used, when relevant, as one evidence source. A score summarizes performance produced under defined conditions. It does not represent the learner's full developmental history, and it does not define the learner.

A standard provides a reference. A score provides evidence under defined conditions. Neither defines the learner.
I am using a competency-based orientation (CBE). The central design question is: What can the learner actually demonstrate? CBE is appropriate because the course identifies specific speaking competencies and does not require a learner to repeat what has already been demonstrated. Bates (2019) describes competency-based learning as identifying specific competencies or skills and recognizing demonstrated mastery, including prior learning where appropriate.
For example, if a learner clearly demonstrates Claim → Evidence → Comparison → Conclusion in Portuguese but cannot yet reproduce that organization in spoken English, I do not conclude that the learner is unable to organize an argument. I treat argument organization as demonstrated and target the transfer of that capability into spoken English.

Fink's Integrated Course Design provides the principal alignment framework in this design. Human Pipeline uses a CBE orientation to ensure that instruction targets only what the evidence shows requires development.
Boundary: Human Pipeline is a fixed four-week intensive course. I am applying CBE principles to targeted speaking competencies; I am not claiming that the course constitutes a complete self-paced competency credential.
I use Fink's Integrated Course Design for alignment and Bates' Agile Design as the adaptive online design approach. Fink helps me align significant learning goals, learning activities, and assessment activities across six dimensions: Foundational Knowledge, Application, Integration, Human Dimension, Caring, and Learning How to Learn (Fink, 2013). Bates' Agile Design is appropriate because the instructional route must remain responsive to evidence, learner needs, context, technology, and feedback rather than assuming that every learner requires the same remediation (Bates, 2019).
Human Pipeline is the instructional route for this application. Pedagnosis is not the instructional design model and is not presented as a validated methodology. In this project, I use Pedagnosis as my developing, human-governed longitudinal didactic evidence architecture for organizing what was expected, what was demonstrated, what instruction occurred, what changed, what transferred, and what should be examined in the next cycle. 4DX enters only after a meaningful developmental target has been reviewed; it protects the execution of that selected target (McChesney et al., 2012).
The following table summarizes the function of each component within Human Pipeline:

4DX supports execution.
I balance the three functions intentionally rather than treating assessment as something that happens only at the end. Assessment of learning documents what the learner can demonstrate after instruction. Assessment for learning uses evidence to determine what instruction or practice should occur next. Assessment as learning requires the learner to interpret evidence, self-monitor, and make decisions about the next step. This self-regulatory role is consistent with research describing self-regulated learning as involving cognitive, metacognitive, behavioral, motivational, and affective processes (Panadero, 2017).
Self-feedback precedes external or AI interpretation whenever possible. The learner first has an opportunity to see and explain the evidence before another person or a tool organizes it.
Assessment of learning documents demonstrated performance after instruction. In Human Pipeline, this function is served by the revised speaking performance, the T3 transfer task, and other final performance evidence produced after the instructional cycle.
Assessment for learning informs the next instructional decision. Evidence gathered through the T1 baseline, targeted feedback, and T2 comparison may indicate that a learner needs focused development in sentence construction, articles, connectors, vocabulary, rhetorical organization, pronunciation, thought grouping, stress, pause, pace, emphasis, or another evidenced competency. The instructional route therefore responds to evidence rather than providing generalized remediation.
Assessment as learning gives the learner an active role in interpreting and regulating their own development. Drawing on the self-regulated learning literature (Panadero, 2017), Human Pipeline positions the learner as an active interpreter of evidence rather than a passive recipient of feedback. The learner examines evidence, compares performances across time, reflects on what changed and why, reviews external interpretations, helps select developmental targets, and participates in determining appropriate next steps with human support.
Deeper learning is promoted through a repeated progression: Application → Reflection → Revision → Reassessment → Independent Performance → Transfer. The learner does not simply perform correctly once. I ask whether the capability can be demonstrated again, whether it remains stable, whether it can be used independently, and whether it appears under a new or meaningfully changed condition. Fink's framework supports learning that moves beyond content recall toward application, integration, human significance, and learning how to learn (Fink, 2013).
In practice, each speaking cycle produces evidence. The learner records, self-assesses, receives targeted support, revises, performs again, and eventually uses the capability in a changed context. The objective is not one better recording; it is increasingly independent and transferable communication.
Application → Reflection → Revision → Reassessment → Independent Performance → Transfer
Both — with explicit human governance. The learner has meaningful agency, and the instructor or authorized human retains responsibility for standards, instructional quality, context, and consequential decisions. AI is subordinate to both.
AI organizes. Humans decide.
Student-Centered + Teacher-Led: Learner agency is substantive; human instructional governance remains explicit; learner voice and human judgment guide the route.
Teaching Roles: The instructor primarily functions as facilitator, coach, and mentor. The instructor may briefly function as presenter when appropriate. Human guidance remains visible throughout the course.
Online Format: Short audio/video evidence; browser-accessible resources; learner reflection; repeated speaking performances.
Academic Quality and Support: Fink alignment; CEFR as an external performance reference; evidence-based assessment; host-institution accessibility, privacy, academic-integrity, technology, learner-support, and assessment policies apply when deployed.
The governance sequence within Human Pipeline operates as follows:
AI support is not limited to 4DX. Evidence organization may occur before execution begins, after evidence exists and learner review has occurred whenever possible. 4DX itself enters only after human/learner target review.

Within the 4DX execution cycle, AI may support approved functions such as organizing approved evidence, tracking approved actions, summarizing cadence evidence or notes, supporting candidate practice, and supporting approved reporting. AI does not select the WIG. AI does not autonomously define lead measures. AI does not determine whether a learner is succeeding in a human-value sense. AI does not make consequential decisions.

The table intentionally has three functional columns. The Fink dimension is embedded in the Learning Goals column rather than added as a fourth column. Weeks are cross-referenced within activities where useful; the course sequence itself appears in the implementation schedule.

The complete design map makes visible the alignment between intended learning, instructional experience, and evidence — Goal ↔ Activity ↔ Evidence — rather than simply listing course activities.
Orientation module — not an instructional week. The course sequence is: Start Here → Week 1 → Week 2 → Week 3 → Week 4 → Phase 2.
The Start Here module comes before Week 1 because I do not want the learner's first experience with the course to be an assessment. Before I ask someone to show me what they can do, I need to make visible what we are doing, why we are doing it, how the course works, and what will happen to the evidence they produce.
Start Here introduces the course purpose, the Human Pipeline route, expectations, navigation, technology requirements, learner-support resources, and the evidence process. Only after that orientation does the learner enter Week 1 and produce the T1 baseline.
I enter this course not only as the instructor, but also as someone who knows the experience of carrying knowledge across languages. I know what it means to have an idea that feels complete in one language and to discover that, in another, only part of it becomes visible.
That experience is part of why I designed Human Pipeline. I do not ask learners to prove their intelligence through English. I want to understand what they already know and can demonstrate, what is becoming lost or reduced on the route to spoken English, and what specific development can help their public communication represent their thinking more fully.
I am therefore not standing outside the learning experience asking learners to become perfect speakers. I enter the community with my own multilingual experience while maintaining my responsibility as the instructor to guide, support, interpret evidence in context, and protect academic quality.
The learning community begins with experience before evaluation. Learners are invited to introduce themselves through the languages, academic or professional contexts, and communication experiences they bring with them.
They identify one situation in which they want their spoken English to represent their thinking more effectively. That situation may be a presentation, an interview, a classroom discussion, a conference, a defense, a professional meeting, or another meaningful context.
Difference is not introduced as deficiency. It becomes part of understanding where the learner is beginning, what matters to that learner, and what kind of instructional route may be meaningful.
Course goals are introduced in Start Here and made visible again at the beginning of each instructional module. I want learners to understand not only what they are expected to do, but why they are doing it and what evidence will make development visible.
Each module therefore makes the relationship among these three elements explicit:

The alignment should not exist only in my instructional design document. The learner should be able to see the route too.
Human Pipeline is designed as a fully online course.
Google Classroom (Still researching) is the current planned learning environment for course navigation, communication, instructional resources, activities, and submissions.
Pedagnosis serves a different function. It is the developing, human-governed longitudinal didactic evidence architecture used to preserve the route among expectations, demonstrated performance, instructional targets, development, reassessment, and transfer.
Google Classroom supports course delivery. Pedagnosis preserves the longitudinal evidence route.
The planned course structure is approximately 80% asynchronous and 20% synchronous.
Most learning occurs asynchronously through videos, speaking recordings, practice, self-feedback, reflection, revision, and evidence review. This gives learners time to listen to themselves, think, practice, revise, and examine what changes across performances.
Synchronous interaction is used selectively for coaching, clarification, targeted feedback, and community connection when real-time human interaction adds instructional value.
My role changes according to what the learner and the evidence require. At times, I am a presenter because something first needs to be explained or modeled. More often, I function as a facilitator, coach, and mentor.
I clarify expectations, support practice, examine evidence in context, provide targeted feedback, and help the learner determine what should happen next.
Learner agency does not mean the absence of teaching. Human governance does not mean removing agency from the learner. The route is shared, but responsibilities remain visible.
Learners need access to an internet-enabled device, a microphone, and basic audio or video recording capability.
Start Here provides navigation guidance, recording instructions, technology requirements, accessibility information, examples, learner-support resources, and alternative submission options when appropriate.
Technology should make learning possible; it should not accidentally become another measure of capability. If a technical barrier prevents evidence from becoming visible, the first instructional question should be how to remove the barrier — not what is wrong with the learner.
Course resources are designed for browser-based access across devices so that learning is not unnecessarily tied to one place or one type of technology. Peer interaction, feedback, and community participation provide structured opportunities for social learning, while social networking remains a support for connection rather than the instructional goal itself.
The implementation follows the same logic that governs Human Pipeline itself:
Make the route visible before judging the result.
Begin with purpose and context. Make expectations visible. Produce evidence. Distinguish what is already demonstrated from what still requires development. Target instruction accordingly. Practice. Reassess. Look for transfer. Determine the next evidence cycle.
The platform can organize the learning environment, and technology can support the process, but neither should replace learner agency or human judgment.
AI organizes. Humans decide.
Google Classroom hosts the course; Pedagnosis makes the learning and evidence route visible over time.
Course structure: Four-week intensive online course. The four weeks constitute the instructional implementation. Pedagnosis continues longitudinally after Week 4; that continuation is not a fifth instructional week.

The goal is not simply to compare three scores. The objective is to examine how performance changes through instruction, practice, reassessment, and transfer — and to use that examination to determine what the learner should develop next. The evidence sequence is not a grading rubric; it is a developmental record that makes the learner's trajectory visible over time.
Production status — The narrated design presentation will be produced after this design document is finalized. The presentation will not introduce a different structure; it will walk through the same Context → Design Approach → Design Artifacts sequence and show the supporting resources.
The presentation storyboard and script are intentionally not developed in this document; they are the next production step after the academic design is closed.
The central argument of Human Pipeline, stated plainly:
Spoken-English performance should not be used as a proxy for academic or intellectual capability.
Human Pipeline develops the observable route between capabilities already demonstrated through evidence and their clearer expression through spoken English.
The design does not reduce expectations or excuse inadequate performance.
It makes the instructional target more precise.
This portion is completed after the design is shared for peer feedback. I will respond to questions and comments, distinguish feedback that changes the design from feedback that only changes presentation, and document any revision I actually make. The later learning reflection will explain how peer feedback influenced the design rather than simply listing comments.
Following the peer-feedback process, I will document how the feedback influenced my design. The reflection will identify actual changes rather than simply report that feedback was received. If a peer raises a question that leads me to reconsider a design decision, I will explain what changed and why. If feedback does not result in a design change, I will explain why the original decision was retained and what conceptual boundary it protects.
I will distinguish among three categories: feedback that changes the design; feedback that changes only presentation or clarity; and feedback that is considered but does not justify a design change. This reflection will later become part of my broader learning reflection for the course.
The final ePortfolio page will function as one cohesive design page rather than a collection of disconnected files. It will embed the narrated video and provide direct access to the supporting design resources, including this design document, the Fink 3-Column Table, the implementation schedule, and the references. This boundary is not a disclaimer. It is a design principle. The course is built on the premise that a learner's spoken-English performance at a given moment is one piece of evidence — not a complete account of who that learner is, what they know, or what they are capable of becoming.
A performance score can summarize evidence produced under defined conditions.
